Facade and hoarding work is as much about surface preparation and access as it is about artwork. We survey the substrate, plan the access method, then build a paint system that survives UV, rain and thermal movement.
Commissioned work in exterior facade & hoarding painting normally runs from 258 to 3083 m², with 12–25 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 150–600 per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Wall Painting & Murals capability, alongside 12 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.
When exterior facade & hoarding painting is the right answer - and when it is not
Outdoor mural work is a materials problem before it is an art problem. The wall will get rain, UV, freeze-thaw, pollution and thermal movement, and the finish has to survive all of it while looking deliberate rather than weathered. It suits hoarding, facade panels, exterior feature walls and long-lived public work. It is not the place to specify an interior system and hope, which is the most common reason exterior murals fail in the second year.
How the work is actually carried out
The substrate is inspected for damp, salt, efflorescence and loose render before anything is applied, because no coating survives a failing background. Materials are selected as a system - primer, base, colour and protective coat from one compatible family - rather than assembled from whatever is on site. Movement joints and substrate changes are respected, with the coating detailed to accommodate them instead of bridging and cracking. A UV-stable clear coat is specified at the sheen appropriate to the orientation and the glare.

Build tiers for exterior facade & hoarding painting
Exterior facade & hoarding painting is not one product at one size: the table below is the same scope ladder we quote on, so you can see where your project sits before asking for a price.
| Build tier | Typical area | Production days | What changes at this tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 100–3000 m² | 15–30 | Up to 3000 m², one substrate and one access setup, 15–30 days in the workshop. |
| Tier 2 | 100–2000 m² | 7–15 | 100–2000 m² across two or more faces, 7–15 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 3 | 200–5000 m² | 15–30 | 200–5000 m² across two or more faces, 15–30 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 4 | 100–3000 m² | 10–25 | 100–3000 m² across two or more faces, 10–25 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 5 | 50–500 m² | 7–20 | 50–500 m² across two or more faces, 7–20 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 6 | 1000–5000 m² | 20–30 | 1000 m² and above, multiple substrate types and phased access, 20–30 days with a join and numbering plan. |
What we deliver

Faults we see most often in exterior facade & hoarding painting
Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.
- Coating over a damp or salt-contaminated wall, which pushes the failure out rather than fixing it and blisters within a season.
- Bridging a movement joint with a rigid finish, guaranteeing a crack exactly where you least want one.
- Mixing products from different manufacturers, so the layers are individually sound but incompatible with each other.
What to settle before an overseas project starts
| Orientation and climate | Which way the wall faces, what the annual weather does, and whether it is coastal or industrial. Each drives a different specification. |
|---|---|
| Substrate report | Photographs plus whatever is known about the build-up, damp history and previous coatings. Where there is doubt we test before pricing. |
| Design life expectation | Tell us whether this is a two-year hoarding or a fifteen-year facade. It changes the specification completely and honestly. |
