Photoluminescent pigments charge from ambient light and release it slowly, adding a second layer of content after dark. It is used in children's areas, night-time venues and themed attractions where the evening experience matters as much as the day.
Commissioned work in glow-in-the-dark mural normally runs from 9 to 118 m², with 5–9 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 150–600 per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Wall Painting & Murals capability, alongside 12 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.
When glow-in-the-dark mural is the right answer - and when it is not
Photoluminescent murals add a second layer of content after dark, charging from ordinary ambient light and releasing it slowly. They suit children's wards, night-time venues and themed attractions where the evening experience is as important as the day. They do not replace statutory escape lighting and should never be specified as if they did - brightness that reads as art is far below what a safety system must deliver.
How the work is actually carried out
The pigment is applied over a light-toned base, because afterglow rides on whatever the pigment absorbed and a dark ground wastes it. Coats are built to the thickness the pigment data sheet calls for; going thinner shortens both brightness and duration more than most clients expect. The design is planned around the darkness as well as the light, with the shapes that matter placed where the glow will actually be seen. Gloss is avoided so nothing reflects the room after the lights go down.

Faults we see most often in glow-in-the-dark mural
Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.
- Laying glow pigment over a dark or strongly coloured base, which absorbs the charge instead of releasing it.
- Assuming the mural doubles as emergency lighting - it will not pass any statutory test and must not be presented as doing so.
- Specifying a grade from a photograph of another project instead of from the pigment's measured afterglow figures.
What to settle before an overseas project starts
| Charge lighting | Tell us what lights the wall during the day and for how long. Charge time drives both brightness and how long the glow lasts. |
|---|---|
| Pigment grade | Grades differ substantially in cost and duration. Tell us the hours the room needs to stay readable and we will specify to that. |
| Safety separation | If the space is a place of public assembly, confirm the certified escape lighting is separate. We are decorative and supplementary only. |
