Luminous art treats light as the medium rather than the illumination: the piece is made of it. Structure, diffusion and control are designed so the visible object is the glow and nothing else.
Commissioned work in luminous art installation normally runs from 6 to 30 m², with 15–35 working days in production from approved drawings. The reference range for this technique is CNY 180–800 per m², quoted itemised. It sits within our Architectural Lighting & Light Art capability, alongside 7 related techniques, and the 4-point deliverable below is what a commission includes as standard.
When luminous art installation is the right answer - and when it is not
Luminous art is chosen where light itself should be the material of the piece - colour and movement in space rather than an object that happens to be lit. It suits public art, hotel and museum interiors, corporate atria and attraction work. Its value depends entirely on darkness and on a considered viewing context, so it belongs where the setting allows the light to work.
How the work is actually carried out
The piece is designed as a lighting composition rather than as a structure with lights added: the diffusion, the source and the control are considered together so the whole thing reads as light. Materials are chosen for their behaviour with light - diffusing acrylic, glass, fibre optic, neon flex - and the construction is modular and serviceable, with cabling concealed and every unit reachable. Control is designed so scenes can be programmed and changed, and for exterior or public work the IP rating, load and safety requirements are resolved before specification.

Reference price bands for Luminous art installation
Indicative only, based on the scope normally quoted for luminous art installation. A firm price follows a site survey and an itemised quotation split into material, labour, finishing, packing and freight.
| Scope | Typical area | Reference total | Unit rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small area | 6–15 m² | CNY 1,080 – CNY 12,000 | approx. CNY 800/m² |

Build tiers for luminous art installation
Luminous art installation is not one product at one size: the table below is the same scope ladder we quote on, so you can see where your project sits before asking for a price.
| Build tier | Typical area | Production days | What changes at this tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | 6–30 m² | 20–45 | Up to 30 m², one substrate and one access setup, 20–45 days in the workshop. |
| Tier 2 | 6–30 m² | 20–40 | 6–30 m² across two or more faces, 20–40 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 3 | 6–30 m² | 10–25 | 6–30 m² across two or more faces, 10–25 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 4 | 6–30 m² | 15–35 | 6–30 m² across two or more faces, 15–35 days, substrate build-up agreed per location. |
| Tier 5 | 6–30 m² | 12–30 | 6 m² and above, multiple substrate types and phased access, 12–30 days with a join and numbering plan. |
What we deliver
- Lighting design, photometric calculation and mock-up testing
- Facade, landscape, and festival lighting installation
- Projection mapping and programmable light shows
- Control systems, dimming and maintenance access planning
Faults we see most often in luminous art installation
Each of these is a field failure rather than a workshop one, and each is cheaper to prevent at enquiry stage than to correct after installation.
- Designing a structure and adding lighting at the end, which produces a lit object rather than a piece of luminous art.
- Sealing the piece with no service access, turning a lamp replacement into a rebuild.
- Specifying the light source without a control plan, so the piece cannot be reprogrammed for different times or events.
What to settle before an overseas project starts
| Darkness and context | Tell us what surrounds the piece and how dark it actually gets. Luminous art depends on that more than on its own design. |
|---|---|
| Control requirements | Tell us whether colour and scenes must change - for events, seasons or a schedule. It changes the system specification substantially. |
| Service access | Confirm how the piece will be reached for maintenance. Access designed in is invisible; access added later usually is not. |
